The Secret World Guide ~ Understanding The Secret World Skill Wheel

.
The Secret World Skill Wheel
Any player jumping into the Secret World will probably be initially confused by the skill wheel. While it is
very different from what most games utilize, it does make sense, and after you understand the system you won’t mind it at all, you may even come to enjoy it a little.

The Basics

As you can see from the picture, the skill wheel is broken up into three different categories. Magic, Ranged and Melee. Those categories further break down into three different sub-categories as well. The wheel is set up so that no matter what type of weapons or attacks you want
to use, there is plenty of customization in each of the various categories and as complex as this wheel looks it actually does a very good job at organizing the 525 different abilities available in the game.

Specializing

No character is locked into any of the specializations in the Secret World. Instead you can choose to specialize in any one area of the wheel, or you can sink your points into several different areas of the wheel.
If you take a closer look at one section of the wheel you will see that there are two different tiers. Both tiers contain abilities for each of the three different sub-sections of the skill wheel. For instance the first two rectangles on the “Magic” rung have abilities for Elementalism while the third and fourth rectangles are for Chaos and the last two are for Blood Magic.
The first tier of abilities are broader and you will have to put several of your Anima Points or AP points into the top tier to gain access to the corresponding lower tier where the more powerful abilities reside.

The Secret World Guide
Shameless World of Warcraft Reference

To anyone who has played World of Warcraft for any period of time the skill wheel can be explained very easily. It works very similar to how the talent tree in World of Warcraft functions. You invest your points into one section of the wheel and in order to access the more powerful abilities you have to invest more points to get to the lower parts of the wheel. You have to be willing to commit to one section of the wheel if you are ever going to hope to get access to the most powerful abilities in the game.

Side Note about Decks

If you are the type of player who does not like to do a lot of thinking you can utilize the decks system to guide you in building the type of character that you are looking for. The system makes the game simpler and can be good for newer players who don’t know how to start.
Even though the Secret World has a huge number of abilities for you to choose from they manage to keep it very organized with their skill wheel and the level of customization that you can have with any of your characters is pretty amazing.

Have Fun!
